A Touch of History: Bhimtal Lake

Beauty of Bhimtal Lake

Bhimtal Lake’s history combines ancient legend with colonial-era engineering, being named after the Pandava hero Bhima from the Mahabharata, who is believed to have created the lake by striking the ground with his mace during the Pandavas’ exile. Later, in 1883, the British built a masonry dam at one end of the lake, creating its current C-shape and the island at its center. The area was also an ancient trade route, and a 17th-century Shiva temple on the lake’s bank was rebuilt by a Kumaon king.
